trains always win

If the mother survives which I hope she does (to forever be pained ), she oughta be tried for murder! I give her NO sympathy here. First, she scares her kids half to death racing the train and then she murders her children and takes away the sisters of their brothers in such a terrifying violent way.. She knew there was a chance she wouldn't make it. It almost seems suicidal and don't give me crap about our busy rush-rush-lives. There is NO excuse. I feel sorry these kids have a murderer for a mother. May they eventually forgive her and visit her in prison.

Video shows mom's fatal race with train

Recently released surveillance footage shows just how two trains crashed into a Hammond mother's minivan Saturday, killing her two daughters.

The video, captured by Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District cameras at the Hammond station parking lot, shows a CSX freight train traveling east, toward Johnson Avenue, near the Hudson Street intersection.

Suddenly, a dark-colored minivan driven by Edie Bolanos blurs into the picture. Outpaced by the train, the eastbound van starts to pick up speed in the adjacent parking lot, parallel to the freight train. The van eventually takes the lead.

Footage from another surveillance camera shows the van approaching a barrier. It sharply turns left and goes through a tight turn to the right, around the barrier and onto Johnson Avenue.

The van speeds toward the tracks. The eastbound train is about to hit the intersection. It's not there yet.

But a westbound train is, just in time to smash into the left side of the van.

The van bounces off the train onto the eastbound tracks. The train Bolanos was trying to outrun collides into its right side.

Bolanos' daughters, Crystal, 11, and Anahi, 8, were killed on impact, pronounced dead at the scene a little after 10:35 a.m.

Bolanos herself is in critical condition at Loyola University Health Services in Maywood, Ill. Family friend Monica Segura said Tuesday her condition was deteriorating.

Bolanos' two sons, 3-year-old Daniel and 13-year-old Leon, survived. They were treated at Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago on Saturday, improved to good condition by Tuesday and were discharged Wednesday.

The funerals are at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Church, 812 W. 144th St., in East Chicago, with burial to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 8178 Cline Ave.

The wakes are today and Friday between 2 and 8 p.m. at Chapel Lawn.

Segura said a benefit will be hosted at 9 p.m. Saturday at Durango Bar and Grill, 4536 S. Hohman Ave., in Hammond. Admission is $10.

Segura already organized a benefit with Bolanos' neighbor, Rafael Ruiz, set for Wednesday night as of press time. Cash donations can be made at any Centier Bank location, Segura said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Segura said they were receiving donations from multiple businesses, and one woman contacted her to donate $500 toward the caskets.

Monetary donations for the family can be made at any Centier Bank location, Segura said.

Sgt. Mike Jorden said the case still is under investigation.

There are currently no guard arms at the intersection where the crash took place, but there are flashing lights warning drivers of approaching trains.
